The Krooked House Art Shop and the sisters Shannon and Tonya MacPhail
Where you're from and where you are currently living?
We grew up in Lowersackville Nova Scotia and now we live together in Seaforth, Nova Scotia.
What’s your background?
We are self-taught artists. We always had fun creating stuff and it turned into a business.
What kind of art do you make?
We make paintings, prints, cards, ornaments, and jewelry mostly inspired by the ocean and our surroundings.
How do you make it?
Tonya comes up with the original designs in the form of acrylic paint on wood then Shannon takes it from there working with prints of the original images to create different products.
Why do you use certain materials?
Acrylic paint is easy and versatile and wood is natural and a nice smooth surface.
What does your artwork represent?
Most of the art represents the life we have here by the sea and the things we see on a day to day basis.
Does your art represent something about you?
Why do you make this type of Art?
In the same way that writers are advised to "write what they know" we kind of do that with the art we create.
Most of the art is images of what we see and know in our everyday life. Surfers, wildlife, community life and the beaches
How do you navigate the art world, where can we see and get our hands on a piece of your Art?
We have a little shop in our home in Seaforth where we sell our art. We are open by chance or appointment and love when people come by. We also sell to many shops throughout the Atlantic province. You can follow us on Facebook or Instagram and write to us if you'd like to come by sometime.
How do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years we would be happy as can be to be right where we are now doing exactly what we are doing. We love our life here and feel so lucky to be living in this beautiful place and its never-ending inspiration.
Thanks for your time!
