Meet ZACK from BAJANPRO

Tell us about yourself: Where are you from? Where do you currently live?

I’m originally from Barbados and truthfully couldn’t have asked for a better place to call home.

Tell us about some of your hobbies and passions.

Hands down, I’m most passionate about Photography and Videography. Not only have these fields become my day-to-day profession, but you’d rarely find me without a camera when with friends. Apart from being behind the lens, I also enjoy Scuba Diving and Free Diving in my free time.

Tell us how did you get started and involved in photography and film making?

I’d say it all started when I got a GoPro Hero 3 for my birthday back in 2013. I used to carry it around with me wherever I’d go, filming brief videos of any and everything - from island tours to very small shore breaks. From thereon, the rest is history; Bajanpro has continuously grown and I’m very excited to see where it all goes!

What do you prefer the most; Photography or film making?

To be honest, it’s about 50/50 for me. There are a few subjects that I prefer to photograph, such as people,  whereas others are definitely better captured by video, rally, weddings, and surfing, for instance.

What do you like the most about what you do?

For me, I think it’s really exciting and enjoyable to be able to first envision a particular project and then work to bring it to life. That in itself, as well as bringing a smile to my client’s faces, makes it all so worth it.

Who and what inspire you?

I can’t really pinpoint who or what it is specifically, but whenever I see something that I feel inspired by whether it’s a song, video, photo, idea, I save it to look back at whenever I’m lacking creativity or motivation.

Growing up and living on an island is in and of itself such a source of inspiration. I’d say that I’m hugely inspired by the paradise and personalities that surround me every day whether it’s my close friends, seascapes, or our culture

Living here is a creative’s Utopia!

How would you describe your style of work?

I’d describe what I do as very personal. I enjoy capturing candids of friends, memorable moments subjects, and events that I know looking back on really resonate with me and my clients.

Any photography/film making project you will like to accomplish?

I’m currently working on a surf video featuring Olivia and Gylla, friends of mine who I often shoot with here in Barbados. There are also a couple of other projects I’ve had on the back burner for a while that I’m looking to finish up pretty soon, so stay tuned!

Where would be your dream destination assignment?

Somewhere where the water is crystal clear. I really enjoy shooting underwater, so I think that would be pretty interesting. I’d love to hike and shoot somewhere with striking mountains during sunrise or sunset you can’t beat the golden hour. Also, somewhere that has consistently good weather! Honestly can’t tell you how many times a shoot has been canceled due to bipolar weather, haha!

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

My go-to lens and in my opinion the best all-round lens is the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM. However, you can’t go wrong with the Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM for a day out with friends.

Everything now is about photoshop, how important is Photoshop in your final images?

When it comes to Real Estate Photography, very! Other than that it’s all Lightroom, which I just use to play around with color and light.

What is your favorite image or project you have shot recently?

There are a couple. My favorite video is the 2018 Rally Barbados Video probably the most stressful couple of days of shooting, but I was really happy with how it turned out in the end. The song I used was from an old racing game I used to play when I was younger, so that was quite fun and nostalgic to edit too.

What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue a career in photography/film making?

First Pro tip camera equipment is not cheap! Haha, no but on a serious note do it! I honestly don’t feel like I’m working sometimes, just because of how much fun it can be.

What would you like to be doing 5 years from now?

My aim for 5 years from now would be to have Bajanpro at a point where it’s the leading creative agency in Barbados and possibly within the Caribbean, with a team of people who are just as passionate about photo and video as I am.

Did the Covid-19 did affect your business?

Very much so! The downside would be that a decent amount of work I had lined up came to a complete halt, but the upside would be that it gave me some time to slow down and come up with new, creative content and ideas.

Anything you will like to share with us?

I’d just like to say a huge thank you for the opportunity to share with others a bit more about the ‘Behind the Scenes’ of Bajanpro and to offer some greater insight as to what we do and who we are.

Thanks again Zack for your time and beautiful shots!
